Healthy Me!

So a few weeks ago a friend of mine told me about a green smoothie cleanse she was doing and how she was feeling so much better since she had started it.
It's this book by J.J. Smith. She let me check out her copy of the book which is actually a quick read and I realized that the smoothies looked pretty normal. Nothing crazy or hard to find in them, so I decided it couldn't hurt to try.
I am really at a point in my life where I just want to feel healthy on a regular basis. I exercise but don't always eat well or get enough sleep and it's catching up with me.

So last Monday I started the modified version which is a green smoothie for breakfast, lunch and a healthy dinner with a few snacks throughout the day. For snacks you can have hard boiled eggs and crunchy fruits and veggies with a non sugar peanut butter. No dairy, carbs, red meat, sugary treats, alcohol or juices.
(this was my day six smoothie)
And the smoothies are pretty good! No lie. :) Today on day eight, my smoothie was spinach and spring greens, banana, mango, pineapple, and mixed berries. You can also throw ground flax seed in there or protein powder. Some days I do the flax seed and some days I forget (lol).
I won't say all the smoothies are great. On day 3, I remember telling Mike it tasted a little earthy. Wasn't my favorite.

But since I started eight days ago, my sinuses have been so much better. No sinus headaches at all. I am sleeping better at night and haven't had any processed sugar. No chocolate either! Shocker I know, but I am surviving just fine. I didn't think I could.

After the ten days, you are supposed to ease back into eating more whole foods. So still two smoothies and more choices for meals. I can see myself doing one or two smoothies a day for a while though. Maybe breakfast and dinner with a meal for lunch and small snacks. I thought I would feel super hungry and I did the first and second day. But really after day three, not so much.
And it feels good not to crave sugar. It doesn't mean I'll never have it again I'm sure, but I can walk past the hershey kiss bowl and feel no desire for one. And soda. Done!

I've been pinning a ton of clean eating recipes on my food board on Pinterest as well, because I would like to move away from eating any types of processed and unhealthy foods as much as possible. Hopefully this is the jumpstart I needed and another step to a healthier me!

And for blogging, I am hoping to start posting again a little more frequently, but honestly I will probably only still be reading blogs one or two days a week. Morning time after the kids went to school used to be my blog reading time, but now it's set aside for exercise or subbing. And I am usually too tired these days after the kids go to bed. But I will definitely make time at least once a week because I really miss it!
Happy Monday!

  2. This is GREAT!! :) I am making note of that book. I love making smoothies, but I never found really good combinations that were totally healthy. I do really well during the day, but enjoy having dinner with my hubby, who loves to cook and eat! :) I have been monitoring my portions and we've been coming up with a better weekly menu, so that's helped as well. Love hearing about your progress, it helps me stay motivated as well! :)

  4. This is awesome! Congrats on your smoothies! You are definitely rocking your healthy goal!

A friend just told me about these smoothies too. And now with your post, I'm even more interested in it. I love having a smoothie for breakfast, it is so easy in the morning - especially those crazy mornings when I'm running late for school. I like drinking them in the car!

I'm also trying to eat healthier. I've been way to heavy on carbs, so I need to cut back, hopefully it will help my headaches go away again. They are getting super annoying lately.

  6. Glad you were able to enjoy your detox. I have done that a few times, the first one was a 3 day with very limited calorie intake so I didn't enjoy that. This second one is similar to what you are doing, but vegan protein powder and super veggie powder to mix in. I usually sub one meal (usually dinner). I do feel better after I have done these for awhile. My other big thing is Magnesium supplements. That is where Chocolate cravings come from and let me say it works, plus helps with energy, headaches and a whole host of things.

  8. Good for you….but no sugar and you survived!!!!!
    I'm impressed.
I am good with my walking and such, but not so much with the eating part. Not sure if I could ever give up sugar. Good for you :)

  9. I tried this smootie challenge after seeing your FB post. I agree about the taste, it does taste much better than it looks. Today is my 8th day and I've only lost 2 lbs, but I wasn't expecting a big weight loss since my body works very efficiently on a fruit diet and hence usually no weight loss. Gonna start a modified version from tomorrow onwards and include some lean proteins. :-) Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. So glad you liked it!! I didn't have a big weight loss either. Maybe four pounds, but I felt so much better after doing it. And now that I am eating more whole foods, I am craving doing the smoothies again :) My fave smoothie was the pineapple, banana peach one on day six I think :)
